FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
To whom should I report problems with the PowGIS site?
For site related issues, please contact the GIS Section powaygis@poway.org.
To whom should I report inconsistencies, errors, or problems with spatial layers?
Questions related to planning and zoning layers should go to the City of Poway Development Services Department. Their phone number is (858) 668-4600. For questions related to other layers, please contact the GIS Section at powaygis@poway.org. Please document the problem by printing a small map (using the 'Print ‘ tool) if possible.
Why do the parcel lines not line up with the building footprints or aerial imagery?
The parcel data and other layers are acquired quarterly through San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS). The City of Poway does not maintain its own land base but can request data corrections from SanGIS. However, parcel lines in certain areas of the City will not line up exactly with the aerial imagery because they are derived from separate data sources.
How often is the parcel information updated?
While every effort is made to ensure that the Assessor records are the most up-to-date, certain business processes can take several months for changes to be displayed on the web page. Please Note: The parcel data (and other layers) are updated monthly by San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS) as they receive the data from the County Assessor. The City posts this data within two weeks when it is received from SanGIS. The City of Poway does not maintain its own land base but can request data corrections from SanGIS.
The parcel information shows that the Parcel Size is Unavailable, why?
The parcel data is acquired monthly through San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS) and is not maintained by the City. SanGIS does not keep data for parcels that are less than 0.5 acres so the parcel size for those properties will show up as 'Unavailable'. In addition, if the data for the parcel size in SanGIS is '0' acres, the property report will show 'Unavailable'. If you need to get the acreage of your parcel, please call the City of Poway Development Services Department at (858) 668-4600.
Why do some layers go on and off automatically?
Layers are set to turn on and off at specific scales. This is referred to as scale dependency. For example, parcels cannot be seen when looking at the county as a whole because the information would not be useful at this scale.
Can I download the actual GIS data onto my computer?
Yes. Most of the data available on PowGIS can be downloaded form our GeoHub Open Data page. Please contact the GIS Section if you need assistance at powaygis@poway.org.
Why won't the map zoom in?
If you are having issues with the map not zooming in you may need to clear your browser's cache. If this does not fix the issue, contact the GIS Section at powaygis@poway.org.
